This paper developed out of a presentation by the same name that has been given at a number of universities and transformed to fit a variety of contexts. When given to an audience consisting substantially of undergraduate designers it begins by asking them to imagine the inhabitation or experience of their most recent design project. By means of a series of simple questions, it highlights the fact that many, if not most, inexperienced designers rely exclusively on first-person visual imagination. I expect that many experienced designers do the same. What assumptions are buried in that first person viewpoint and how do they affect the design solution?
